The first article of the new year and a new project are born. It's a column, a simple repository of information, which we hope you'll enjoy and stimulate the critical thinking so dear to us at Sociologicamente. " Stories of Sociology ": we decided to call this new project that because it is, in fact, stories of sociology. The stories of all of us, lovers, scholars, or simply enthusiasts of sociology. The starting point was as simple as it was interesting: how many of those who graduated in sociology actually pursue a profession related to what they studied? Have they been consistent with their studies or have they turned to something else to try to find their place in the world? It is from these questions that we will attempt to tell our, and your, sociology stories. And since New Year's Eve is just over, let's start with a bang: here's Alessio's story. Read it, it's definitely worth it!
The story of Alessio , 37, is a little different from what we're used to. To give you an idea, you finish high school, enroll in college, graduate, and start looking for a job—ideally one you like and that allows you to live decently. Alessio, like a skilled mathematician, decided that changing the order of the addends wouldn't change the result. And in the end, he was right. Alessio graduated in 2011 with a degree in Sociology from the Faculty of Social Sciences at Gabriele D'Annunzio University in Chieti. The fact is, he already had a job.
“ Since January 2006, I've been working as a metalworker at the FCA plant in Termoli (CB), Molise. For me, being a worker is the best job there is, the most humble. I've never considered taking a different path, I've never wanted to do anything else. I do the same job as my father, and in a certain sense, I see it as a continuation of the family .”
With a job already underway, why did you decide to get back to studying?
"I decided to pursue studies because I've always been fascinated by the social phenomena that shape our society. I also wanted to challenge myself, get involved, and try to do something extraordinary in my own small way. I believe that personal satisfaction is the most rewarding.".
Not only a worker and sociologist, you are also a poet.
"Since September, I've been curating a weekly poetry column on primonumero.it, Molise's leading online newspaper. I've renamed them "Fantapoesie," where I try to apply all my imagination to narrative poetry. A sensitive inventiveness, aimed at gently and politely entering readers' hearts, giving voice to those who don't have one. Here, too, I bring sociology into play. In my own small way, I try to analyze social issues, in a simple and light-hearted way.".
So, what does sociology mean to you?
"Sociology is my life. I defended my thesis on the communication of Made in Italy, and specifically on internal and external communication at the FCA plant in Termoli. It was a wonderful experience, working while simultaneously researching and analyzing data within the company, interacting with managers and unions.".
Simply Alessio, 37 years old, a metalworker who found his happiness between an engine and a gearbox.
