For over half a century, Pietro Nenni has embodied the history and ideals of Socialism and the Italian Socialist Party. Socialism is a broad complex of ideologies, political orientations, but also movements and doctrines that strive for a radical transformation of society toward the economic, social, and legal equality of all citizens.
One of Nenni's most famous quotes sums up the meaning of this term: " Socialism is bringing forward all those born behind ." It is therefore a work of "emancipation" of a large portion of the population that finds itself at a disadvantage from an economic, social, and legal standpoint compared to the rest of the population.
What drove Pietro Nenni to "fight" for this social category? What did he do to be remembered today as the leader of Italian Socialism and not simply a politician? His contribution as a member of the Constituent Assembly is a consequence of everything he did prior to that important role entrusted to him.
The life of Pietro Nenni
Born in Faenza, a white island in the yellow (Republican) and red (Socialist) Romagna in 1891, the son of a poor family, he lost his father at an early age but, given his dedication to study, his mother, in order not to deprive him of this privilege, took on the most menial jobs to support her son's studies.
He initially joined the republican movement, but at a young age he witnessed the first repressions perpetrated against workers by landowners and the army, which changed his mind. He decided to side with the humble and oppressed, a choice he remained faithful to throughout his life. He met Benito Mussolini in prison during the "Red Week."
Mussolini would soon become the founder and undisputed leader of fascism , even though he had previously sympathized with the Republican Party. From this point on, the paths of the two "cellmates" diverged because they had very different ideals. Pietro Nenni would fight fiercely against fascism.
He joined the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) in 1921, the year of the Communist split in Livorno, which deeply wounded him, both personally and within the Italian democracy and left. As a leading figure in anti-fascism during the twenty-year Fascist era, he was a trusted point of reference for all democrats. He fought in Spain to save the young republic alongside democrats from around the world. It was precisely this Spanish experience that laid the foundation for the political unity of action with Palmiro Togliatti's Communists. This collaborative relationship would lead to the Frontist alliance and the experience of the Italian Resistance after September 8, 1943. Returning to Italy after the fall of the Duce, he assumed leadership of the Socialist Party of Proletarian Unity, along with Sandro Pertini, Giuseppe Saragat, and Lelio Basso.
His profuse commitment to politics allowed him to hold very important positions, even coming close to becoming Prime Minister. He is also best remembered for his profound commitment, or rather, his battle, for the Republic. He was convinced that the Republic would bring a balance that had previously been lacking in politics. His motto was: " Either the Republic or chaos ," followed by " The Republic will be socialist or it will not be ." Nenni was convinced he could change things, becoming the symbol of the renewal and change that arose from the partisan movement and the Resistance. He died on January 1, 1980.

We find an important connection between his social work (the desire to help the humble and oppressed) and his primary role within the Constituent Assembly.
Our Constitution is made up of articles on equality and parity , and they dictate the rights and duties that every citizen must have. Since Nenni believed that everyone should be on the same social level in terms of rights (and duties), it's fair to say that his ideas influenced the drafting of the Constitution's articles.
In these few, concise lines, we've listed the most significant events that characterized Pietro Nenni's life. Three key points are certainly worth highlighting:
- Pietro Nenni, besides being a politician, was a man with a great humanity and a disproportionate passion for everything he did and which above all concerned the “social”;
- He remained consistent with his ideals until the end of his life and never changed his mind;
- Founding Father.
